popup-records is based in Hamburg, GERMANY. The company was founded in May 2001 by Jan Köpke and Christoph Wieland as a home for innovative indie-, pop- electronic styles of music besides regular charts and heavy-rotations. Musically the label stayed open minded over the years featuring hiphop-punkers (such as Splatterdandy) as well as electro-rockers (OCKER) or bluesy clicks’n’cuts nerds as HARDMAN Bros.
The artist development of newcomers always was the main objective of popup-records. The press complimented popup-records several times for it’s good music and appealing packaging design. After the crash of it`s worldwide distributor EFA Medien in 2004 - popup was very close to discontinuance of business as well. Early 2005 Christoph left popup for family reasons and Jan continued to renew the company`s portfolio and it`s marketing strategies. In 2008 - after seven years - popup-records is still working totally independent and became, with meanwhile two sublabels, one of the most exciting creative-cells in Germany and home for highly talented musicians and groups from Germany and all over Europe, as e.g. LODGER (Finland), BABYBIRD (UK), JUNESEX and MOORE:MUSIC (F), BRIDGE & TUNNEL and WHITE DAUGHTER and THE SONS (UK).
Besides the label business popup very sucessfully runs it`s own promotion agency and booking division. Further to this professional music consulting, media- & distribution services and external labelmanagment became important new segments in popup`s portfolio.
